Dear Residents of York West,

Four years ago I ran for public school trustee.  I came second, losing by 136 votes to the current trustee.  The four years since that election have not been good ones for the kids and schools in York West:

*an increase in violent incidents in our high schools
*our expulsion/suspension rate is one of the highest in Toronto
*the turnover of superintendents, principals and teachers is the highest in Toronto
*our parent councils in each school should be powerful voices for change and school improvement but they aren't.

We need to change this.  We need a trustee who will work with parents to ensure their voice is heard.  We need a trustee who understands that working with Board officials is the first step in getting the programs and leadership and resources we need into our schools.  We need a trustee who can bring new ideas and new energy to York West.

The same old same old is not working for us.  Leadership is more than just being hyper critical of school officials.  Leadership is more than complaining about what others are not doing.

Leadership is taking responsibility for our own actions and plans.  Leadership is rolling up our sleeves and making things work in our own community.  Leadership is listening and valuing and working with parents and staff and the community to make our schools safe places where our kids can get the tools they need for a successful future.

Leadership is working to establish new and innovative programs in our schools and insisting on York West getting its fair share.

We can do better.  I thought so four years ago and I know so today.  It's time for a change, for a new energy, a new vision and a new enthusiasm.  On October 25 I am asking for your vote to bring about the change we deserve.

                                                                             Sincerely, Michael Sullivan
